O’Bannon looking to rebound in Phoenix

CHANDLER, Ariz. – NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Sean O’Bannon and the Jack O’Bannon Racing/Forest River RV’s team would just as soon forget the season-opener in Pomona, Calif., three weeks ago. The team only got one qualifying session in the rain-plagued event, which pushed eliminations back to Tuesday, which featured unseasonably cold temperatures. The team looks to put all that behind them as they enter this weekend’s Division 7 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series opener at Firebird Raceway just outside of Phoenix.

O’Bannon, 30, of Ontario, Calif., hopes data collected during preseason testing at Firebird will help the team make a strong showing this weekend.

“Pomona was just one of those races,” said O’Bannon. “We made a great run right out of the trailer and qualified third, then we just sat around for four days and watched it rain. The conditions were quite a bit cooler on Tuesday, and we just missed the tune-up.

“We ran several mid 5.60’s in testing last month in Phoenix,” O’Bannon continued. “Hopefully we can use that to get off to a good start, then build from there. We feel really confident about what this team can do, and hopefully we can make a strong showing for Forest River RV’s.”

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with one session, followed by two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
