O'Bannon scores second-straight win in Vegas


LAS VEGAS - NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Sean O'Bannon and the Jack O'Bannon Racing/Forest River RV's backed team scored their second-straight divisional win during this past weekend's Division 7 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at 'The Strip' at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The win moves him to fourth in national point standings and solidified his spot atop the Division 7 standings.

O'Bannon, 30, of Ontario, Calif., qualified his Jeff Lirones tuned '08 Monte Carlo second in the tough field, which saw over 20 cars vying for eight spots, with a 5.644 second elapsed time at 254.18 mph. In round one, he defeated Mark Woznichak with a 5.660 at 254.62 mph and then took out former three-time Division 7 Champ Doug Gordon with a 5.638 at 254.95 mph in the semifinals.

O'Bannon's final round opponent would be the reigning Division 7 Champ, Terry Ruckman. O'Bannon remained the picture of consistency with a 5.654 at 254.90 to take the win over Ruckman, who got out of shape and had to lift.

"It was a great weekend for the team," said O'Bannon. "It's like we finally got the monkey off our back by winning the first one in Phoenix. We're finally starting to get some of the lucky breaks go our way. I can't say enough about the job Jeff Lirones has done since he's taken over as Crew Chief.

"We may not have the fastest car out there, but Jeff has made this car a low 5.60 bracket car," O'Bannon continued. "That's really become our main focus; going A to B. So far it seems to be working pretty well. We're also very happy to make a good showing and get in the winner's circle for our sponsors Forest River RV's, Fontana Wood Products and Lubrication Engineers."

The next stop for the Jack O'Bannon Racing/Forest River RV's team will be the O'Reilly Summer Nationals in Topeka, Kan., May 29-31. O'Bannon reached the final of that event last year.
