Quarter-Final Finish for New D-7 Champ

ANAHEIM, CA — Sean Bellemeur entered the Auto Club Finals with high hopes. His last visit to this fabled race track resulted in a runner-up finish, so his sights were set on settling the score. Sean rolled the beautiful Meer Homes Funny Car to the Pomona starting line on Thursday and reeled off a nice 5.72-second run at 254.71 mph. With 26 cars making attempts, that initial pass put them in the number five spot. Crew chief, Bob DeVour noted, “We’ll take it. We weren’t sure what the track would hold and we might have left a little on the table.”

The second session came on Friday and Team Meer had two goals in mind – step up and run better, or at least run consistently. Neither would come to pass, as Sean got loose and had to lift, running 5.97 in the process. Since several cars stepped up from the previous round, their fifth spot slipped to ninth.

Car owner, Ron Meer, commented, “The smallest adjustments can affect these cars in a big way. We’ve got one more shot to get back into the top half of the field and that’s our goal today.” Later that afternoon, Meer’s goal came to fruition, as Sean recorded a 5.670 at 254.33 mph, to secure the eighth spot on the ladder. That was important, as the top eight drivers get lane choice for the first round of eliminations. Bellemeur experienced severe tire shake in round one, pedaled the car and recovered enough to get the win light. Round two brought one of the closest battles in eliminations, but Sean’s 5.673 was outdistanced by Von Smith’s 5.612. That Pomona win will have to wait until 2008, but Team Meer is still victorious, having won the 2007 Lucas Oil Pacific Division 7 championship.

Ron Meer Motorsports sends special thanks to Randy Anderson, Chase Knight at Crane Cams, Gary and David Sumek of Lenco, Brian Scollon at GRP, Mike Gruber from Valvoline and Bud from Pendarvis Manufacturing.
