I am installing my egt's and connector boxes. Does the lenght of the egt leads have any effect on accuracy? I was going to mount the boxes on the firewall in line will each header but it seems it will work better to have them both on the passenger side. This will creat a situation where one set of leads will be longer than the other.

    Any issues?

    Thanks

Just talked to Randy and no the lenghts make no difference. The leads can be all different lenghts, no change. I kinda figured that but wanted to check.

Just figured I would follow up on this.

With Racepak they are all different length depending on what cylinder. The most important thing is having the tip of the probe exactly in the center of each tube. Just as a reminder once you get above 1000* it is far more accurate to read the plugs than to try and balance or tune the motor by EGTs. Don't be surprised if sometimes the EGTs give you a different reading than what you see on the plugs. The plug reading is the correct one

One question I have, the install instructions I have say to put the probe 2" back(from the flange face) for alcohol and to insert the probe 3/8" protruding into the header tube, if you have the probe on top. If the install is from the bottom, the probe is to be put in the center of the tube. I cant see what the difference is.

    Gettin a little confused:(,

    Any insight?

I guess their theory is because of the curvature of the header/zoomie as it turns down the flame center tends to be closer to the top of the tube the heat rises and the EGT will read higher than it really is so to correct for this they only insert it 3/8" on the top. My recommendation is to insert them mid point from the bottom. THey get less chance of damage from the bottom and they read a more accurate temp.

Racepak has been recommending the sensors 1/4" into the pipe recently IF your are turbocharged or blown Nitro.

Lots of my turbo customers kill the sensors and Racepak/Exhaust Gas even has come up a sensor with a thicker tip to try to get some longevity.

I will say after selling thousands of EGT kits to NA guys over the past 12 years and seeing lots installed incorrectly, I wonder if the distance in the tube is not that critical if a good quality sensor is used.

I think in a blown alcohol motor the position in the tube is very critical for the correct temperature reading.
