What is it internally that determines the rotation?

OK I've never even held a MSD mag in my hands (reason for my other post)

    but as a Electrical Engineer

magnetic pickups usual fire on the trailing edge. ie as the magnet passes the pick up it will fire as the magnet leaves the face of the pick up.

    so,

I would think the big issue would be rotor phasing if it was turned the other direction. the pickup would fire on the oposite edge of the magnet and therefor would be out of phase.

now for the big guess, if you dissassembled the mag and flipped the center section over just maybe the mag would be back in phase.

but as stated I haven't even held one so any info would be appreciated

you may not even have to flip it if you can just change the rotor phasing.

Yes you can flip the coils over but the pickups have to be re-aligned also.

You need to exchange two pieces. One in the bottom part which determines firing angle with the internal trigger. And one in the upper part phasing the rotor to align with the trigger pulses. Simple metal parts, no wiring involved. We did it ourselves with some instructions from a local engine builder over here who had the spares we needed. Finished it in about half an hour. On the large cap MAG's you will probably have to re-align the cap as well, but we're running the standard cap.
I have no idea about costs and part numbers of the parts. We just exchanged them, but it looks a couple of dollars worth only.
In fact if your running a crank trigger, you could only change the top part to phase the rotor, but that would make it a dangerous combo if you crank trigger fails and you decide to use the internal trigger in a hurry.

    Cheers,
    Marcel
