I recently bought a 5.4 Blown TAD with "all the best parts" unfortunately when I disassembled the engine (before running it) I found that it had a repaired crank (Bryant) which had failed on two journals - stress cracks on repaired surface and areas actually flaking off.
What are the thoughts on running repaired cranks at this level of performance? would anyone recommend repairing and running this crank again?

Send it to David Eden at Marine Cranks in Santa Ana. He'll give you an honest assessment.

    crank

You just spent a lot of money. Do yourself a favor and buy a new crank. What is $3000 at this point. Good luck with that car/ Don

Whilst I thank everyone for their replies - the thread has gone a little off track - probably the way I phrased the question - I have no intention of rebuilding the engine with a repaired crank or in fact a repaired, repaired crank - my question was to gauge opinion/thoughts on running repaired cranks at this level of performance in the US as I was told that it is acceptable, even though this one failed.

I had not realised my profile details had disappeared - should be rectified now.

Properly done, welded journals will provide exellent service. One of the real problems is that journals that are too badly damaged are repaired anyway and this leads to failures. Welding a journal is like most other types of welding repair jobs, you have to be able to remove all of the damaged material first. Another thing to watch is that the shaft has to be properly straightened after welding. It is tempting to just grind the mains which will make them straight again, but the snout and flange area will no longer be true. Overall welding shafts is not particularly difficult but does require knowledge of proper techniques.

You can get ahold of me (good luck, REAL busy right now!) at 616-260-4064 or 616-681-9559 or Jeff at 616-217-7944. Actually your probably better off calling Jeff first. He spends most of the day in front of the crank grinder and on the phone! Located in the COLD small town of Dorr, MI
