I recall seeing some threads on this subject a while back. I am tired of throwing away $80worth of oil after each pass. With all of you creative guys out there, I am interested in what some of you are doing with cooking/seperating alky from the oil to reuse.

I use a hot plate and a big pot, amd i have seen others use a turkey fryer. I hear Marty Thacker has a good system.

    oil

I don't have any experience with cooking the oil out of any other oil other than Red Line.

We use a big turkey fryer set up....a big pot with a propane burner. We keep the heat regulated to a low boil and let it cook until you see it change colors and not foaming quite as much.

With the Red Line we keep running it until we notice the oil pressure get down 10-15 lbs below 'new'...you kind of get a feel for it. It's not like it goes from good to bad...

We make 60-70 runs a year on about 1.3 to 1.5 55 gallon drums a year. I think last year was closer to 1 drum...we had some left over we used in testing before we cracked the new drum for this year. That's Red Line 60 wt.

Valvoline 60 weight vr1 plus one qt lucas oil stabilizer....boil in turkey fryer after every weekend. Take heat to appox 200 deg. the methanol boils and evaps, the oil goes from tan to dark brown/black. Works like a charm...bearings look great everytime I look at them. Another plus is my pot is marked at 15 quarts so I always know I have full oil level when I pour it back in. Also I pour back into motor while still hot...goes in like water....I pour 7.5 quarts in each side out of little 2 gal buckets.

We do the same as most others except we use an electric pot with thermosat
    then one step further:
i have a small pump setup and pump all the oil thru a amsoil 2 micron absolute bypass filter to remove any metals that you can not see, then and lucas oil stablizer to add some of the additive package back in

Multi-task? Has anyone tried to throw a turkey in during this process?

    idea

I have been doing this for many years. We too use redline 60w but I used to do it with royal purple.

Anyway, turkey fryer pot, put a small (2" diameter by inch or inch and a half tall) "sump" in the bottom of the pot on the outside edge. Thread for 1/4" pipe and install a ball valve (petcock) with a 90 degree fitting on the end facing down. Now put your used oil in it (we usually drain it right out of the car into the pot) put on an electric burner (hotplate) and heat. We use the electric because safer with no open flame and most hot plates will only get the oil up to about 185 - 190 degrees. Allow to "boil" as long as needed (usually a couple hours) until the "rolling" action stops. It will quit boiling when the methanol is gone. Now allow to cool some, put the turkey pot on a table, put a 5 gallon jug under it with a funnel. We use a paint filter in the funnel, open the petcock and let the oil run out through the filter into the jug. Simple. We get 10 or 12 runs. As will mentioned, you can kinda tell when the oil is spent. Saves a lot of money and is ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY! We get by on about a drum of oil per year running about 90 runs.

Does this same process work with nitro? I have been just letting the oil sit and skiming the top it takes forever to get enough.

    Nitro

No it is opposite with the nitro. NO HEAT. Just let the oil sit in the pot and cool clear down, the nitro is heavier than the oil and will separate out to the bottom (at least with Redline Oil) then you open the petcock and drain the nitro until you start to get oil, stop, wait another hour or so, repeat. It usually takes about three times to get most of the nitro out. I have done this and reused the oil three or four times. It does change the color some but seems to work fine.

    Recycle Oil

Thanks for all of the info. Went to Lowes and bought a 35 quart turkey "chicken" fryer for the Charlotte race in 3 weeks.
