I am talking BBChevy but this might cross to other brands.

Recently I was told that the intention of the rear seal was not to line up the parting lines of the seal and the main cap. Have you ever heard this?

I am looking for any tips on how to get this to seal better, how do you do it? I usually line up the ends, dab a little silicone on them and preoil them and thats it.

    Rear seal

I rotate the real seal on all by BBC engines, no alot just about 3/4" off the parting line. I still put a dab of sealant on as well. I used to put the seal even with the cap split line, never really had any leaks either way. Staggering them is supposed to help keep the oil from channeling out the spilt line, sounded good to me so I do it. Personal preference IMO

The offset deal works well. Kind of like a a piston ring spacing. Still have to do a thin film of sealer on the cap/block area.

I hate to admit it but Ford championed this idea way, way back when on one of their engines. I came across it in an old factory manual many yrs ago.

I use that brownish purple hi tack gasket junk from permatex. You know the stuff. It is messy, stringy, makes a complete and total mess on both the engine, the stand, your fingers, shirt and the cap when you try to re-dip the brush applicator back into the jar as it is still stringing from the surface three feet away, and then you basically weld the thing closed when you tighten it down and forget that you own it for the next four months. I put that stuff and kick the rear main about 10 degrees or so and I have not had a rear main leak on my last 30 or 40 BBC's.
Now, where is some wood to knock on real quick?

Dave, you absolutely correct. It was in the factory engine manual for my 351C in my brand new 1971 Mustang. When Dave says a thin smear between the block and the rear main cap edges close to the seal we are talking about a real thin thin smear. Too much will result in it pushing out into the oil channel behind the seal.

I always use this procedure on our 429 Ford Hemi block and have never had a leak yet.

That is the stuff. I use that on rear mains, and around freeze plugs on installation.
