Piston compression height measuring

    Have pistons that I want to measure the compression height, so I go to JE web site and as I had thought, saw that this height is the dist from pin center to top of piston NOT COUNTING THE DOME. Yet I see some adds here for pistons with nearly 2 inch compression height ???? These are BAE fat head pistons which have 2 huge valve reliefs going all the way down to nearly the edge of the deck,,but there is still area to measure from that to the pin center. Any help would be appreciated. Warren

    The best way to get a compression height is to slide a pin in one side of the piston, measure from the top of the pin to the area above the top ring land that has a small edge before the dome starts. Add half the diameter of the pin to this measurment and that is the comprission height. The valve pockets will be less distance from the pin and have nothing to do with the compression height.

    Bill that is exactly how I do it...but I cant see how someone comes up with nearly 2 inches in compression height on a typical BAE fat head piston and rod....must be a mighty short rod and top heavy piston????? lol

    Not sure about the TAD style engines but a 3.75 stroke in a standard deck block and a 6.8 rod would be around 2. compression height. That would be the same rod ratio I run with my standard deck and a 3.950 stroke.
