    Hi

Over the past season we have had two batteries fail during seperate meetings, we use the battery purely for the shift / staging lights and the MSD single retard control on our MSD Promag 12 ignition system.

The battery we have been using is the gel filled orange Odyssey type, about the same size as the Motorbike ones.

Is there a particular battery on the market that is specificaly built for drag race applications and can handle the harsh conditions of tire shake, our car is 125" Blown altered, what are the TA/FC guys running to power up thier on board electrics?

    Cheers
    Marc

    12V gel battery.

If you mount the battery behind the driver the battery will not last in tire shake. If you mount it behind the fuel tank up front it will last for years.

Snyder Motorsports sells a battery that would be perfect for this, we run one on our TAD and have never had one fail. You can call them at 219-987-2921, Larry or Mick.

    Battery

I run a Milwaukee 18 volt drill battery. Quartermax has a mount with wires for it. I just change it out with a fresh one every pass.

Nope, it's been working great! It runs the tach, transbrake (lencodrive), and datalogger (Autometer). I had talked to Racepac and they said their unit has its own battery. One disclaimer, I have only made 9 passes since getting the car together.

I ran 18 volts for years with no problems. I also use an alarm battery now and it is 7 years old. It is in a sand/mud drag car which means it gets very rough treatment.

    Marc,

The Odyssey battery you are talking about is a good battery. However, in our environments(tire shake, etc.) it can be tough to get any battery to live. The Odyssey and the black battery sold by numerous people are made by the same company. It is a good product.

Perhaps, you should contact Dave Leahy at Electrimotion. He makes small battery packs for our applications. We have had great success with his stuff. Most of the fuel and alcohol teams use his stuff.

We also have a battery that is similar to the Odyssey and Genesis in size. However, ours is more powerful. We use this battery in our 48 volt battery packs.

From a reliability stand point and for your application, I would contact Dave Leahy. If you have any questions on our batteries, feel free to call.

I use a 14 volt Millwakee battery with an adaptor. Fully charged it is 16 to 17 volts. We also use the same batt. on our 3/8 " impacts. I run the six shooter and retard box also Lehey timers. Have not recharged it this year and it is still 15 volts which you can read everytime you turn the ign. sw. on in the window of your Lehey timer.

It locks into the adp. just like on the impact. Mount ours sideways so under accel and stoping G"s it is not trying to come out.
