Looking for recommendations of oil viscosity and brand(s) for 14-71 BBC on alcohol in a fuel altered. Spark plug heat range as well 20-25 pounds boost, 10.25 CR BB3 Xtra solids, 44 Mag, with grid

    Thanks in advance.

NGK R5671A-10 works great and is easy to read and is reasonably priced. If you are really going to push the envelope and want the absolute best then it is the NGK R6061-10 but they are way more expensive. The 6061 has a shorter ground strap that prevents it from turning red hot and acting like a glow plug.

    Hey Jeff,

We are running Prad Penn 50wt with some Lucas stabilizer. I am not sure about your Pan that is pretty small.

My pan holds 12 and I run 15 quarts in the motor KB olds. I don't think 7 is near enough for you..

    Main Bearing Clearance

On the main bearing clearance is that .003 total and includes both sides of the journal in the .003? If so, that is .0015 actual oil clearance for each side.
I would be a little nervous on that small of clearance with any thick oil. Just saying.

I'm running a similar combo. Probably more boost. Mains are .0035. I'm running 20w-50 with a bottle of Lucas. 8.25 qts total fill with 1qt filter. I have checked bearings twice in 7 passes and don't see any oiling related problems. I ran 70w last year with a tad more clearance and spun a bearing, but not sure the root cause.

I maybe a moron but in my experience there is absolutly no reason not to run the thickest oil you can find.

When i ran my chevy bbc i just used 70wt oil. it is the same oil i run in my current hemi I have never had an oil related issue. Sure i have blown stuff up but it is never because of my oil. I ran my chevy with a wet sump as i run hemi with a standard olson funny car wet sump oil pan. I have always bought my oil from a Top fuel friend of mine.

I have never understood why people insist on running thinner oils. Whats the point when there are no issues with running a thicker oil. I live in denmark on the first and last races of the season it can get chilly. But i have never preheated my oil either. The only thing you have to worry about is the canister oil filters. They tend to break with the thicker oils if you buy the cheap ones.

My bearings always look good during winter tear down. I do change them during the winter overhaul, just because not that it is really needed.

Thinner oil returns to the pan quicker. It makes a difference on a system pushing quantity to the minimum. Most setups just run a huge quantity of oil with virtually no control of where it goes.

This was one of my suspicions of what happened when I switched to 70w. I had run 15w40, 20w50 and straight 60 without trouble. I made a few passes on 70w, and then it got starved for oil about 1200 ft. I think I was a half quart or so lower than I had been on the first few passes. It also may have been a failed oil filter. I had already broken one oil filter without any damage (inspected all bearings afterwards). but tossed this one in the trash can without even looking at it (pretty distraught by the carnage at that point).
