Both boxes have basically the same functions. If you can get a new 8973 then they are up just over $800 and you can get a Grid for $352. The Grid has newer electronics and is really reliable. It is the first thing to be blamed if something goes wrong but ends up not being a Grid problem. The Grid can be set up to record the ignition timing and other functions on the Racepak V series and the 8973 cannot. Also the Grid internally records the run and is absolutely fantastic for troubleshooting if you have a problem most racers forget this is available or don't understand it. Hookup is about the same on both units. I know both boxes really well and I would go for the Grid. It is rumored that some time in the near future you can link to the Grid with Bluetooth and can make quick changes in the staging lanes with a iPhone or Android phone. I hope that this Bluetooth link is done via an add on module so we can have it without buying a new Grid. If you do a search for new 8973's on the internet you will discover that they are not availed anymore at a lot of places because they are being phased out. Feel free to ask for specific questions about either unit.
