As I understand it the MSD 10 had problems that were fixed with the 10 plus.
    What were those problems?
    What were typical symptoms?

Don't know about problems, but MSD has discontinued the 10+ and 8 boxes, replaced by the 8 plus unit. If you think maybe the 10 Box is causing a problem try a known good box in it's place, you can chase your tail on these things. Been there, Done that!

The MSD 10 Plus is not being discontinued due to any tech problems. It's pure marketing and sells. There not selling enough of them to continue the inventory and manufacturing costs.

I've been using an MSD 10 plus for 7 years now. the same distributor, coil & box on my blown Mopar 440 wedge and now on my blown KB Hemi with no problems.

    And my question was...
What did the "plus" fix that the plain 10 had problems with?

I heard that the 10 plus kills your plug wires. Get only around 20 passes out of them.

    MSD 10 & MSD 10 Plus

The MSD 10 used two coils with a coupler that merged the spark together as one to the distributor. The 10 Plus did away with that and uses a special single HVC type Coil and actually makes more power. This coil is made specifically for and can only be used with the 10 Plus.

Here is a comparison of MSD ignition system power outs:

    In order:
    ProMag 44 – 950 milliJoules
    MSD 10+ - 700 mJ
    MSD 8 - 315-345 mJ
    ProMag 12 - 300 mJ
    Digital 7 - 190 mJ
    7AL3 - 160 mJ
    Digital 6 - 135 mJ
    7AL2 - 105 -115 mJ
    MSD-6 - 105-115 mJ

You can see where your 7AL3 falls in comparison to a MSD10+. I think the MSD10+ is worth considering.

    Msd10+

Hi all, we have run a MSD10+ for 3 years and not had to replace the cap or leads in that time. The other thing to note is the voltage output of the MSD10+, it is around 50kv and puts out close to this at cranking speed. This makes starting easier than with a mag and also keeps the plugs cleaner. Cheers
