I've got a BB chevy deal and have been reading alot of threads that guys are running the Moroso 3 qt accusump in the oiling system. I get the plumbing BUT where are you guys mounting the accumulator itself in a door car?

I can't seem to find a decent place to mount one.

    Thanks

Ive got a stupid question....exactly how does an Accusump work?? I see an air fitting to "pressurize" the can and the on/off valve.......but what is the operating sequence??

From what I has read there is a few ways you can operate them. In mine I was going to leave the accumulator wide open for extra oil capacity and let it just dump when the engine shuts off. Alot of people close the valve to trap the pressure, then shut the engine off, so they have a pre-oil on start up.

Is there a spring in there that allows it to fill and have pressure behind it? If so...where does the air go on the back side of the plunger...?? Reason I am asking is I have one sitting in the shop and am interested in using it, Thanks

I'm pretty sure its just a piston with air on one side and oil on the other. When the oil pressure is less than the air the oil comes out to feed the galleries. When the oil pressure is higher than the air pressure the oil pushes the piston into the canister ready for a low oil situation. No springs that I have heard of.

You need to keep a small air charge in it, hence the fitting and guage.

    accusump

I've had one on a MBR hemi for 2 years and it works real well. Keeps oil pressure from going to zero for us on long runs (pulling truck). I have mine mounted right beside seat, so I can reach down and turn it on before firing engine to pre-lube and try to remember to shut it off before pulling fuel shut-off and hitting ignition switch at end of run, to keep it charged for next start up. Can't relly help you with location on a door car. Good luck.

How much air pressure do you have in the cannister?

Thanks for all the info, I just ordered one, I'll just figure out a mount when I have it in my hand. Bound to be someplace I can stick it.

    Oil Accumulator

The oil accumulators are a cylinder that is capped at the two ends (both end are removable, for cleaning) and has a roughly 1" thick piston inside.
On my Moroso, this piston has two grooves about 3/8" apart that hold an O-ring each.
These O-rings are what keeps the piston air tight.
The piston can slide from one end of r the cylinder to the other.
There is a Schrader valve in one end of the accumulator and an outlet on the other.
The outlet is plumbed to the oil galley and air pressure is introduced through the Schrader valve.

To make the accumulator operate, on our car I put 20# in the Schrader valve side, with roughly 70# of oil pressure when the engine is running.
If the engine were to loose oil pressure, anything LESS THAN 20# will immediately send the accumulated oil in the tank to the engine oil galley.

It is nothing more that air pressure on one side and oil pressure on the other.

On the Moroso accumulator, the ends have a wire ring that holds the ends into the tank itself. Press the wire end down and the wire ring slides out.
It is quite simple and basically fool proof.

We just have the accumulator plumbed to the engine, there is a mechanical shut off, but being old and forgetful, I would always forget to turn it off before shutting the engine down.
We now just leave the 20# in the backside and when the engine starts, it shoves the extra 3 quarts into the tank, ready for use.

That is what it is and how it works, your results may vary........

    Your Pal, Gary
