What material should I use for a sadle in a KB Olds alublock, Iron or Auminium?

The saddle should ideally be the same material as the cap.
If the cap was alu and the saddle was steel when the bore of the mains is machined it would want to take more material from the cap is it is softer.
If the cap and the saddle are the same material the hardness is the same. Therefore the machining tool wont be pushed to either side and you will end up with a truer bore line.

If you have an alu cap you will probably find it is made from 7075 grade aluminum.

I have had some blocks (TFX 96/2000) with steel saddles. Worked fine.
