magnefluxing crank

hi wanted to know, how do you tell what cranks are good for machining the cracks out. heard racers cutting them on the journals to chevy size to eliminate the cracks, and just using chevy size rod ends. but how do you tell if cracks are too deep and this cannot be done? thx
