Callaway looking for 'homefield advantage' in Baytown

BAYTOWN, Texas - In stick and ball sports, homefield advantage can play a big role in who wins or loses the game. NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Lee Callaway hopes to use a little of that home field magic for this weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Houston Raceway Park. Callaway and the Skull Shine/Conway Automotive team enter the event just 42 points behind Spencer Massey, and need a win to tie him in points.

Callaway, who lives within earshot of the track in Baytown, hopes to use a combination of racing at his home track with some momentum from a strong showing in Earlville, Ia., last weekend. The race was rained out on Sunday, but after three qualifying sessions Callaway and car owner/tuner Tom Conway had nearly two-tenths on the rest of the field.

"Tom had the car running pretty strong last weekend in Earlville," said Callaway. "The car has been very consistent at the past few races, so hopefully we can keep that going. It will be interesting to see what the car can run in the sea level conditions we see in Baytown."

Callaway and Conway are no stranger to late season title fights. Callaway won the 2002 Division 4 Championship and lost the 2003 Championship by a mere point. Conway won eight Division 4 Championship along with two World Championships as a driver. He also won the World Championship and Division 4 Championship as a car owner last year. After this event, the duo has two more races to overtake Massey.

"We just need to go out there and play our own game," stated Callaway. "It's hard not to, but you really have to put all of the hype out of your head. I'm going to have a lot of friends and family out this weekend, so hopefully we can win one for them."

Qualifying begins on Friday with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
