Jim Whiteley looking for fourth national event win in Brainerd

Div 7 2012_lvms 016.JPG BRAINERD, Minn. – Four-time defending NHRA Division 7 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion Jim Whiteley and his YNot Racing team will be looking to find their way back to the winner’s circle during this weekend’s Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minn. Whiteley currently holds a 64 point lead in national points standings over second place Chris Demke and will be looking for his fourth national event win of the season.

Whiteley, from Grand Junction, Colo., is quick to point out under this year’s new points format, national event points are at a premium. Under the new points format, racers can claim their best seven out of the first ten national events they attend along with the best three out of the first six regional events they attend. This weekend’s event will be his eighth national event of the year. He will need to reach the semifinals for him to add to his points total, replacing a second round loss at the season-opening Winternationals.

“We definitely need to do well,” said Whiteley. “It’s not going to be an easy race – none of them are. It is forecasted to be cool, so that will help the A/Fuelers run good. We’ll take whatever we can get, whether it’s running good or luck, we just need to get the car in the winner’s circle this weekend. We’re running out of races to claim.

“I have all the faith in the world in my team,” Whiteley continued. “The car has been running great, just a few small things have bitten us this year. We need to keep that to a minimum the rest of the year. There are some good racers that will give us a run for the championship by the end of the year.”

Qualifying begins on Friday for the Top Alcohol cars with two sessions, followed by one final session Saturday. Eliminations begin with round one on Saturday evening and final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
