Whiteley runs the table for third straight win in Montana

ACTON, Mont. – Current NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster points leader Jim Whiteley and his YNot Racing Team won their third-straight event during this past weekend’s Division 6 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Yellowstone Drag Strip just outside of Billings, Mont. Whiteley dominated the event, qualifying No. 1, resetting both ends of the track record, running low e.t. of every round en route to collecting his third divisional win of the year.

Whiteley, of Grand Junction, Colo., qualified his Norm Grimes tuned Blown Alcohol Dragster No. 1 with a track-record 5.384 second elapsed time at 264.13 mph. In round one, he received a competition bye and soloed to a 5.429 at 261.98 mph. In round two, he defeated the always-tough Joey Severance with a 5.428 second elapsed time to set up the final with Division 6 heavy-hitter Shawn Cowie.

The final round was essentially over at the start, as Whiteley took a huge starting line advantage and never looked back, extending his round win streak to ten straight rounds with a 5.488 at 260.61 mph.

“Norm and the guys gave me a great car this weekend,” said Whiteley. “Norm has this car making so much horsepower; it was hard to slow down. He feels like there is more left in it, it’s just making unreal power. The car was just going down the track every run. The car isn’t doing anything stupid; it’s pretty easy to drive. We’re not hurting any parts right now either. Everything is just clicking.”

With the strong numbers Whiteley has run at altitude tracks, his car has been under constant scrutiny. NHRA officials took another hard look at the YNot machine again this weekend.

“They checked the blower out again this weekend,” explained Whiteley. “We really do welcome the added attention from the tech officials. That way it erases any doubt whether or not we’re cheating. In a way, when people think you’re cheating, it’s a form of a compliment. They don’t accuse you of cheating when you’re not outrunning them.”

Whiteley was also quick to credit excellent track conditions to his performance this weekend.

“This place is just a neat facility,” cited Whiteley. “The track was pretty darn good all weekend. The track also went above and beyond what they had to do and awarded us $1,000 bonus money for low e.t. and top speed during qualifying. That’s refreshing to see because you don’t see that kind of effort put out by most divisional tracks anymore. They had a pretty good crowd on Sunday, so it was fun putting on a show for them and getting the win.”

The win extended his lead in national points standings to 64 points over Marty Thacker, who won the Toyo Tires Nationals in Reading, Pa., this past weekend. The win also moved him very close to clinching the Division 7 Championship, as he has amassed a 137 point lead over second-place Duane Shields.

The YNot Racing Team will stay on the road as they head southeast to Topeka, Kan., for the Division 5 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event next weekend.
