Yep - it's a fuel metering device that is variable depending on RPM.

lol quite ironic the person who responded was from australia, my main question here is, could you turn it into a type of traction control by cutting fuel at an extreme high RPM... or does it just add fuel as the RPM goes up?

In terms of trying to create a traction control device I would tend to think you would want to dump fuel in and make the engine go way rich inorder to kill the power (or you could take a bunch of timing away at a certain point to say control your wheel speed) rather than remove fuel because you could actually create more power and also cause a very lean condition by taking the fuel away.

Doesn't anybody realize that all Top Fuel cars and most TAD/TAFC cars have traction control? That's we retard timing.

Yes, you would dump extra fuel in if you wanted to reduce power at the top end, and as Alkydrag said, you can probably do that more effectively with timing.

yea, that'd work much better you are correct, i didnt realize alchohol classes would let you retard timing depending on RPMs, however i do now realize with a PSI blower it would be very hard to make this work with the high RPM tendencies...

    retard

there is no legal device that retards timing based off any rpm. timing retard is only done on timers legally. i have heard of people using timing retard hooked to boost in the event of an intake pushrod failure, but still not off of rpm.

i think engine rpm retard would just be silly and driveshaft rpm retard would just be illegal.

you already run a chip to keep it from over reving, at least some do. if it reaches a high rpm, it may just be hauling ass, why would you want to retard it there. now if you feel like that area of the run may be shake prone, you may retard the timing through that time area, but thats controlled off time, not rpm.

How much timing would you take away to control tire shake???

I figured I would get an answer like that :) Honestly, we have an MSD retard module but have never used it! I always wondered if it ws 1 degree, 3 degrees, 7 degrees, etc... 20 would be tough as the biggest chip is only 15 degrees!!! Oh well, it can't hurt to ask!

good luck to you this year marty!

    take care,

    chris

    Chris,
If you need some big chips, call Larry Snyder. We call him the "Chip-miester".

    I'll take the luck. Thanks,
    Marty
