LEWIS AMONG LIGHTING FAST QUALIFIERS AT MAC TOOLS U.S. NATIONALS

BROKEN ARROW, OKLA – September 5, 2006 The entry list alone spoke volumes about how difficult it would be to qualify in the top-16 of the 25-car top alcohol funny car field at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, but Brandon “The Kid” Lewis was undeterred.

Looking to make a splash at the world’s largest drag racing event, Lewis saved his best run for the final round of qualifying. While Jay Payne set both ends of the track record in the left lane, Lewis put up a 5.715 elapsed time at 252.24 mph in the right lane and snatched the 14th spot in a remarkable field.

Now in his sophomore campaign in the NHRA, Lewis has qualified at the U.S. Nationals both years he has competed.

“This is easily the fastest race we’ve been to and even though we’re in the bottom half of the qualifiers, we’re happy with the pass we made,” the 20-year-old Lewis said. “To be able to put up that time and qualify at this event with Gene Hackett (owner of sponsor Aluminum Tank & Truck Accessories Inc.) here in the pit is a thrill for our team.”

Lewis was eliminated in the first round by fellow Lucas Oil Division 4 competitor Steve Harker when he overpowered the track and went into a violent tire shake. Harker went on to the semifinal round where he was put out by Bob Tasca III.

Though Lewis Racing Team was back on the trailer a day earlier than they hoped, Lewis said he was pleased with how he and the team showcased their ability.

“There are always people watching when you qualify at this race and we showed we can run with the absolute best in our class,” he said.

Lewis hits the track next at the Division 4 race in Houston beginning Sept. 15 at Houston Raceway Park.
