CHESTERMAN STARTS DIV. 5 SEASON WITH WIN IN TAFC

TOPEKA, Kan. (May 7, 2006) - The 2006 season is already looking a lot like the last three for Cy Chesterman.

Chesterman claimed another win Sunday in the Top Alcohol Funny Car category at a track he lists as his favorite, Heartland Park Topeka. The three-time defending NHRA Division V Funny Car season champion is once again the man to beat in the West Central Division following his final round victory over Jay Payne.

The Sioux City, Iowa resident drove his 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo right down the groove in Sunday’s final, going 5.728/253.56 to take out Payne, a four-time NHRA Division 2 Funny Car champion. Payne’s run was clean until the 300-foot mark when his flopper rattled the tires, and then made a move to the wall. The veteran driver got out of the throttle, and coasted through the finish line at 9.046/81.30.

Chesterman saved his best pass for the final round. His elapsed time in the final of 5.728 seconds was his fastest of the event and was just over six-hundredths quicker than his pass of 5.790 seconds during Friday’s first qualifying round.
