NHRA officials have announced a minimum age requirement for drivers competing at NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series events, beginning in 2008. Starting next year, all competitors at NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series events will be required to be 18 or older.

The rule is in response to California's recent interpretation of the Master Settlement Agreement, which was reached in 1998 between many states and the tobacco industry.

Graham Light, senior vice president of racing operations, NHRA, explained that competitors in NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional events, weekly programs, and O'Reilly NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League are not affected by the new rule

 

More than likely, it's a legal thing so when the HD partners take over, the drivers will be sighing a waver so as not to hold them responsible for any mishap, and the young guns won't need there mommy's and daddy's to sign too.

 

This was in response to a court decision about the agreement between the attorneys general of many states and the tobacco industry. The agreement said that tobacco companies would not advertise to people under 18. There were some court cases about what that really meant and a California court decided that sponsorships would be included. So, NHRA and other organizations had to make the decision to exclude any participant under 18 or give up all tobacco company sponsorships.
