Head temp at finish line...

    Not looking for any secrets, but if any of you guys that are logging head temp during a run could give me a range for finish line temp I'd sure appreciate it. All I need is a "too hot for comfort" number, and a "needs more heat" number if an ideal number is a secret.

    I'll be making my first shakedown runs in two weeks and it would be great to have enough data to recognize trouble.

    Stage 10, fuel head, 14hh, 24lbs.

    Yep. She's a runnin'! So far all looks good. I'm in the process of setting, checking and adjusting all the crap that needs fiddled with.

    Brian, I have seen head temps at the end of a quarter mile vary from 210 to 260* F. A lot depends on the ambient temps, how long you had the motor running through burnout and staging and the the tuneup. It is more important to read the EGTs and plugs at the end of a run than the cylinder head temp. It is important for consistancy and power to watch the head temps at staging and this is where the "secrets" come into play. You can control the staging temps by how much fuel you have at idle and staging. If you are too cool you may drop a cylinder on launch and if way to hot you risk detonation during a run. Based on the data I have seen I believe 160* at stage would be a good target to start off with for you. Then you can drop it down or increase it yourself and find out what is good for you.

    Thanks Mike. I have been planning on trying to get about 160 at stage based on some other posts, including yours. What I don't have, since I've never made a pass in one of these things, is how much it will rise from stage to finish, and at what point I have to start worrying about warping the heads. At the advice of some of you experienced guys I used a channel on my logger for the head temp, which is being taken just above the deck, on the exhaust side, between cylinders 3 and 5. In some ways it's bad to have it, because now, instead of blissful ignorance, I can actually see exact temps and worry about them!

    I think what I'll do is set the engine up to go 160ish at stage and assume that as long as I'm running a safe tune she won's see excess temps at finish. Over time I'll build an idea of what is normal.

    When you hear the motor popping and crackling after a run you know it was a good run. Don't need a head temp gauge for that.

    First time I get a good run the crackling and popping will be drowned out by my screaming like a little girl. :eek:

    just remember Brian if it noses over get out of it..that is a sign of going lean...in all my cases it was to late:( make a couple of 1/2 track passes look at the plugs if all is good make a full pass with a new set of plugs so you can get a good reading from them..good luck I wish I was going to be there..any trouble or questions call me..Dave

    Don't worry Dave, our little track is only 1/8 mile, and I will still be making some early shutoffs just to get used to the car. I intend to work up to a full pass incrementally, so checking the plugs after partials will be part of the gig. I need to prove both the car and the driver.

    I told a friend of mine the other day that since I haven't done this before, the seat belt slots may have to double as drain holes! :rolleyes:
