Just a question/poll type question here. A well known motor builder here said when turning the motor over in order to get oil pressure on the gauge prior to starting the motor was pre-maturely killing the motor.Starting up the motor was much safer because of the time/rotations involved in bringing up pressure on the starter.
I have always brought up pressure with the starter, then plugged in mags and started motor, thats what I was taught.
Am I doing the normal? Most teams I see also do it this way.
Does anyone here just start the motor?
There is alot of real good info on burned pushrods in the existing thread here, thanks guys................................................................

I use a speed handle and a mopar performance priming tool ( $8 ) to prime the pump and check for oil psi . I can get at least 80 psi by hand .

I have always spun the motor for oil pressure when the motor is cold, before warming it up. At the starting line we just fire it , the oil system should still be primed from the warmup. Some guys spin it till they see fuel in the hat also. I don't do that, I don't want to crank it forever. It will start on the squirt bottle just fine.

    oil press

 wouldnt a 3 qt oil accumulator with a 12 volt remote valve be handy, just hit the switch to prime engine, that way it presserizesthe engine and saves the volts in the battery from all that spininging the motor over, anybody using 1!

I prefer to get oil pressure the same way as DQUES - the manual way... but if the Mag is in and I don't have a choice, I will spin the engine.
I don't see how you can do damage to an engine when it's not firing or under load, but if you fire it you better pray it gets instant oil !!

You can put an air nippel on the filler cap of the oil tank, and use a bicycle pump to put pressure into the tank( so you don`t blow out the tank) and motor you only need to get the oil to the bearings and other parts, it dosent have to be under a lot of pressure. ;)

Accusump the only way to go! been using one for several years on a small block chevy, then to by big block and now on my hemi. Well worth the weight penalty. instant 100# oil press on start up even after sitting 3 months, no battery drain, no more loss of oil pressure in the burn out or pulling the chutes on the top end.:D :D best $300.00 I spent. Plus I was able to pull the lead off the front of the car when we put the accusump in its place.
