I have heard conflicting reports on this so I will ask the pros. I have an RJS SFI-15 suit with a 2010 date on it. It was my understanding that it is good through 2010. Others have told me that it expires and the end of this year. Which is true??? Thanks

    Firesuit Expiration

The dates on most safety equipment is usually the date the part was made, not when it expires. A 2010 date on a DJ Safety sfi/ 15 Suit means it needs to be recertified in 2015 (5 years from when the suit was made). Cheers.

Actually your 2007 suit will expire 12 31 2011 since the suit could have been worn in 2007.

Mike, I don't think so. Your suit was made 2005 so you have 05-06-07-08-09 thats 5 years, that suit is expired 12-31-2009.

Thats the way I see anyway.

Suits with 2005 Tags are good to get a driver thru tech inspection by: 11:59pm, Dec 31, 2009. The suit can actually be used for several more days after that if it's a multi-day event. This actually occurs at the several New Years Eve' races.

Recertification requirements for 3.2A/10, 3.2A/15 and 3.2A/20 Driver Suits

The SFI Spec for Driver Suits states that all jacket and pants or driver suits that meet the SFI Spec 3.2A/10 or higher must be recertified on a five-year interval. Suits with these higher ratings have SFI patches that indicate the year of manufacture on them.

The five-year recertification, which was first required in 2000, has raised a few questions about the implementation of the expiration date on non-dated suits.

Below are the recertification dates for the different year patches currently available:

    SFI Patch Insignia
    Recertification Time Frame

    No date patch
    Certification expires on 12/31/04

    2001 date patch
    Certification expires on 12/31/05

    2002 date patch
    Certification expires on 12/31/06

    2003 date patch
    Certification expires on 12/31/07

    2004 date patch
    Certification expires on 12/31/08

For recertification, owners of driver suits should contact the original manufacturer to find out their procedures for returning the suits for inspection and recertification.

On driver suits with sewn-in arm restraints, the date stamped on the arm restraints is a reference date for the manufacturer and has no bearing on the suit's expiration date. For further questions on the requirements, contact either the manufacturer of your driver suit, or SFI .
