With the regional format a near certainty, it looks like increased travel is going to be a fact of life. More to some than others.

I also hear that the 3 region model has more steam than the 2 region model. I think that's a good thing.

I think Cody Perkins had a good point in tabulating points. To cut down on the travel needed to chase the 'regional' championship, why don't we just make the points your first 5 races attended. No drops.

Maybe turn back the clock and give everyone a 'non-claim' race that was declared before the tech card was turned in? Kind of starts defeating the purpose.

You have to attend 3 in region races, 2 out of region.

    Thoughts?

As with the old system, 5of 8 guarantees that the highly funded teams will always win the championships. Declare when you tech in taking points or not, let it be seen on the first qualifing pass run sheet so there is never any confusion of who is taking points. you take points at 5, you DNQ after filling out the card as saying your taking your stuck with 10 for the year. no drops after the race, run as many as you want. Same with nationals, if you screw up, live with it. If you go to 7 of 10 you might as well have maybe 4 teams show up and run a 2 round race for the title. I don't care where you live. Try to plan a 10 national event schedule. you are going to need alot of airplane tickets

Will be interesting to hear the final verdict from NHRA. Not sure how anyone can come up with a points system until you know how many regions/ divisions and how many races each will be comprised of. Just like our Economy almost impossible to fix..

I can remember a time when local top fuel cars ran at divisionals, It was exciting, and when national events came around you rooted for the "home" teams. There were perhaps 90 to 130 top fuel cars in the country. They dropped that format for some of the same reasons. Technology got expensive, tracks were too dangerous for the cars, the money wasn't there. Now they have maybe 25 top fuel cars total in the entire country active, After the demise of top gas which was a lot like Top Alcohol today pro comp was initiated and modeled after a very popular circuit that ran on the west coast. which evolved into what we have today. Now I see the cycle repeating with the same thing happening now. I really don't see alky cars surviving five more years in a regional format. I really really hate to say it and anyone that knows me knows that I have been a die hard alky fan since its inception, But just maybe alky as we know it has run its course. I see the rising popularity of the nostalgia fuel circuit again primarily on the west coast. And also alky racers moving in that direction. WHAT IF NHRA initiated a nostalgia top fuel and funny car series and kept it in the current divisional system? Would it not be easier to promote? And hence bring in a series supporting fan base?

david - you're word "verdict".... it sounds like a judge might sentence some of us to the chair. reading everyone's opinion helps pass the time. waiting for nhra to make a move is like waiting for your name to be called at the dentist office

    ties

If the points are earned the same way with only 5 races you'll have alot of ties at the end of the year. That's where the idea from the other post of using the 20 points per round with qualifying points comes in. Its nothing "new" so Nhra should go for it.
