Taylor Rolls Snake Eyes in Vegas

ANAHEIM, CA — The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway proved to be a racing surface that was unable to be tamed for Dennis Taylor’s Plumbing Concepts Top Alcohol Funny Car. With 26 entrants rolling the dice for eight spots, the odds were stacked against Dennis, just like 17 other racers.

Taylor explained, “We figured Friday night’s qualifying session would be a waste even before we headed to the staging lanes. These aren’t Super Comp cars that are capable of running in any conditions. Top Alcohol cars leave the starting line harder than any other cars in the sport, and their high-horsepower combinations don’t automatically adapt when a promoter thinks it’s a good idea to run at night. The cold conditions made traction non existent.”

At most events, the first attempt helps show the crew how far they can push their tune-up. Unfortunately, Saturday’s initial daytime session became the learning pass, where Dennis and his Crew Chief, Ora Vasquez, were forced to assess what the track would hold. Under the circumstances, they needed to back the power down to avoid tire smoke. Ora added, “Taking power away decreases wheel speed in the first 330 feet, which, in turn, can also bring tire shake, so it’s not easy to find the sweet spot.” The result yielded a decent 5.84 at 246.66 mph that only landed Dennis in the 15th spot.

Two shots down, the final session was also scheduled much later than tuners would have preferred. The temperature had plummeted to 64 degrees and the corrected altitude was over 4,500 ft. above sea level. As a result, the Dennis used lots of his lane spinning the tires, and missed the cut. Taylor looks forward to next weekend’s Auto Club Finals at Pomona, where the team will host several employees and guests from Plumbing Concepts.
