Woodburn Yields One Up, One Down

ANAHEIM, CA — It took Dennis Taylor and his Plumbing Concepts crew all weekend to begin figuring out the tricky racing surface at Oregon’s Woodburn Dragstrip. This Northwest Division 6 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event is one of the team’s favorites, as they’ve been to the finals twice in the last two years, recording a big win just one year ago.

Surprisingly, only nine Funny Cars rolled to the starting line for Friday’s first qualifying session and warm conditions caused concern. Dennis smoked the tires hard, pedaled it and hazed the tires again, tripping the timers at 6.30 seconds for the number six spot.

Saturday found conditions much the same and the early-afternoon session found eight cars in the lanes ready to go. Taylor fought the car all the way to the finish line battling for traction, and recorded a 6.04 at 235 mph. During the final qualifying attempt, experience paid off as the car began to shake the tires and Dennis quickly got it to recover, salvaging a 5.98 at 238. That put the Plumbing Concepts Camaro in the fifth position, setting up the third consecutive Woodburn match-up with Bucky Austin, “The Northwest Hitter,” as race day unfolded.

In preparation for the final eliminations, Crew Chief, Ora Vasquez, calculated his best tune-up of the weekend. Taylor left the starting line with a four-hundredths of a second advantage and turned Bucky away, running 5.86 to his losing 5.92. That served as a great confidence booster for the Plumbing Concepts team, although the battle was far from over. Round two found Oregon’s own, Brian Hough, set to tangle with Taylor. Lane choice proved to be no help as Dennis smoked the tires immediately while Hough streaked to the win light. Two weeks from now, the team battles at the Schuck’s Nationals in Kent, Washington.
