Taylor Scores Three Smooth, One Shakin’

ANAHEIM, CA — The season’s first three-race swing for Dennis Taylor began in Tucson, Arizona, continued to Houston, Texas, last weekend, and culminated this weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada, with a visit to The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The conditions during the SummitRacing.com Nationals always present a host of challenges with the high-desert altitude, relentless sun on the track, as well as the well-chronicled bump in the right-hand lane.

Conditions aside, Taylor unloaded the Plumbing Concepts Funny Car on Friday and ran a smooth 5.73-second blast at 250mph right out of the box, to secure the third qualifying position. Dennis mentioned, “That was an important run for us and it gives us some degree of confidence as we prep the car for its next run. Not bad for the right lane, either.” Later, Crew Chief, Ora Vasquez, positioned Dennis in the left lane, and once again the car went right down the groove, posting a 5.729 at 251.58. Vasquez explained, “We made decent runs in both lanes, so we have to be pleased with our consistency.”

Saturday’s final dqualifier saw 104-degree track temperatures, due to the mid-afternoon scheduling and Taylor cranked out a 5.78. Though not having improved, that session saw eight cars suffer aborted runs, nine cars missed the cut altogether, while Dennis landed in the 11th spot. Relegated to the right lane in Round 1 of Eliminations, both cars had identical reaction times but Taylor’s Camaro went into violent tire shake, while his opponent ran the left lane smoothly. Dennis noted, “That’s one of the possibilities we face each time out. We’re fortunate to have a team that’s deep in experience and we all enjoy racing together. We’ll regroup and come out stronger next time.”
