When Just Qualifying Seems Like a Victory

ANAHEIM, CA — Dennis Taylor and his Plumbing Concepts crew is happy to leave The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway behind after two straight weekends of highs and lows. Testing offered promising results, though things aren’t always as they seem on paper. This past weekend’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Pacific Division 7 event proved to be a supreme test for man and machine. With 20 cars vying for the coveted eight-car qualified field, those who made the show felt like they’d already won, as tough luck was spread evenly among well-sponsored cars, nationally-ranked cars, and recent winners alike.

Dennis opened qualifying with a nice 5.76-second run, quick enough for the number four slot. However, when the parachute tangled in the wheelie bars, Taylor had his hands full trying to shut it down. Explaining, he said, “I grabbed the brake and held on for all I was worth. To compound matters, that boiled the brake fluid and caught a rotor on fire. I hit the sand trap at about 80 (mph) and the car slid sideways half-way to the end of the ‘beach’. Luckily, the damage was minimal. It gave us lots of extra work, though. My crew really pulled together.”

The second attempt was closer to normal, though Dennis had to pedal, the throttle, causing the elapsed time to drop to 5.84. Session three saw the car return to form until engine damage set in. Taylor added, “We were on a good run, but I felt it nose over just before the lights. It still went 5.79, but that put us back in attack mode changing the engine, but at least we qualified. The list of cars that went home shows just how tough this race was.” In Round One, Dennis left first, but narrowly missed a victory, as every car on the grounds fell off. His 5.84 was still the second-quickest lap of the session. Next, Taylor runs Auto Club Dragway at California Speedway (in Fontana) May 4--6.
