    Taylor Trips Trigger in Topeka

ANAHEIM, CA —Dennis Taylor and his Plumbing Concepts crew went through qualifying in methodical fashion at Heartland Park Topeka at this weekend’s O’Reilly Summer Nationals. With 24 Top Alcohol Funny Cars battling for the final 16 positions, competition was tough, but Mother Nature was tougher – delivering blistering heat as the thermometer indicated 90 degrees and above.

Conditions were the same for all racers and Crew Chief, Ora Vasquez, carefully tuned the Plumbing Concepts Camaro for consistent runs of 5.84 and 5.85, landing the team in the 11th qualifying spot. Saturday afternoon’s first round of eliminations saw Taylor give up lane choice to the quicker qualified Mick Snyder. Dennis did his job on the starting line by leaving on Snyder for a holeshot victory, running 5.87 to a losing 5.85. Vasquez noted, “Our driver made that win light possible. We didn’t want to beat ourselves so we made a safe call and it proved to be just enough to get it done.” Dennis was the first of only two drivers to win from the right-hand lane in the opening stanza.

Round two saw fellow California rivals Dennis Taylor and Steve Gasparrelli lined up side by side. Taylor added, “I rolled in a little bit deeper than normal, but I saw all yellow lights before I let the clutch out.” He was a flash too early (-.008) and the win light came on in the other lane, though his opponent suffered tire shake at the green and shut it off. In closing, Dennis mentioned, “I noticed his win light on but I legged it through (running 5.83), so we’d have additional data from a complete run. I’ll tell you though; Ora and the guys have this program turned around after a dismal start to the season. We used common sense and consistency and I’m proud of the way my guys worked in today’s brutal heat and wind.” Taylor runs next at Fontana, California, June 23 – 25.
