Taylor Gets the Shakes in Sonoma

ANAHEIM, CA — The Fram Autolite Nationals in Sonoma, California, provided Dennis Taylor’s team with encouragement and a boost in confidence. Friday’s first qualifier culminated with a respectable 5.82-second run at 253.04 mph, landing them in the number eight spot out of 22 cars battling for the 16-car field. With Steve Boggs and Grant Stoms helping analyze the tune-up combination brainstormed by Taylor’s respected Crew Chief, Ora Vasquez, all parties knew they could tune from that first run. The second session saw Dennis take a quantum leap, recording a stout 5.65. Taylor stated, “I really had to work for that one. It was all over the place from half track to the finish line.”

Saturday’s final session saw last week’s consistency return, when the scoreboards displayed a 5.62 at 251 mph, which solidly secured the fourth spot on the ladder. That gave the hard-working Plumbing Concepts crew an added boost as they went through their normal service routine. Later that afternoon, the first round match-up showed that luck is a big part of drag racing. Using lane choice to run where their combination seemed most compatible, Dennis drove through tire shake and as a result, the performance dropped off, while his opponent ran a tenth quicker than his qualifying pace to take the win.

Dennis noted, “Top Alcohol cars are some of the most competitive of them all. Out here, the smallest adjustment can mean a win or a loss, but we just haven’t had the luck to help back up our performance.”

Taylor and his crew will get another crack at Sonoma’s Infineon Raceway next week, as the track plays host to the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Pacific Division 7 event. That will wrap up three straight, and four races in five weeks, but Sonoma’s performance gives the team a renewed confidence going forward.
