    Taylor Pleased With Consistency

ANAHEIM, CA — Coming into this weekend’s Fram Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway, Dennis Taylor was hoping his crew could settle into a rythym and continue its consistent performance found in recent outings. That’s no easy task, as Top Alcohol Funny Cars are among the hardest accelerating vehicles in the sport. Managing that rate of acceleration is where finesse comes into play.

Comfortable conditions greeted racers as they prepared for Friday’s initial qualifying attempt and Taylor reeled off a 5.68-second pass at better than 253

mph. At that time, only four other cars found quicker out-of-the-box tune-ups. Conditions were similar in the next session, though the corrected altitude was not as good. This time, Dennis charged to a 5.67 at 251. With his signature smile, he commented, “Ora Vasquez and Terry Morrow have worked hard on our tune-up combination and it’s beginning to pay off. I’m also fortunate to have a very talented crew that works tirelessly, whether we’re winning or chasing problems.”

Saturday’s weather conditions were almost as consistent as the race car, and the final qualifying run produced a nice 5.65 at just under 254 mph. Crew chief, Ora Vasquez noted, “Although we only landed in the 13th position, I think we’re better than the numbers show.” The crew handled its normal routine to prepare the Plumbing Concepts car for Final Eliminations. Taylor felt his car was capable of running another consistent lap in Round 1 and it was, but a quicker 5.69 was overshadowed by Jason Rupert’s better reaction time. A dejected Taylor said, “No excuses here. I just made a mistake up there. This crew worked really hard to prepare a fast and safe race car. We still feel good about running four straight passes like that, but I have to do a better job.” Taylor returns to Infineon Raceway again next week for another tough Pacific Division 7 event.
