Freak Breakage Causes Silence in Seattle

ANAHEIM, CA — In an effort to ensure performances similar to the last two Top-10 seasons, Dennis Taylor enlisted the expertise of noted tuners Steve Boggs and Grant Stoms to oversee his team’s application of power. This highly respected duo liked what they saw upon review of Taylor’s set-up, developed by his veteran Crew Chief, Ora Vasquez. As such, the stellar effort put forth by the entire Plumbing Concepts “Super Crew” yielded its best qualifying position of the season. Friday’s first session found Taylor in the number one spot after ripping out a 5.71-second run at 251.39mph, topping the 20 cars entered. Their performance in the second session demonstrated consistency, despite temperatures in the high 90s, when the scoreboards lit up with a 5.72.

For Saturday’s final qualifying attempt when cloud cover provided an added bonus, Vasquez, Boggs and Stoms applied a killer tune-up that promised a 90-percent chance of securing the top spot. This “outside the box” thinking proved a bit too aggressive, as the brutal sun came back just before the engine was fired and the Plumbing Concepts Camaro smoked the tires. However, only a few cars eclipsed Taylor’s numbers from Friday, landing Dennis in the fifth spot.

With conditions still unbearable, lane choice brought some extra confidence going into the first round, and the hard-working crew was ready. Not wanting to beat himself, Dennis took a less aggressive starting line reaction and released the clutch. Only two seconds after launch, the input shaft failed, which couples the transmission to the clutch. However, Taylor’s driving experience is what saved the engine from over-revving. With no power to the rear wheels, that left Dennis to imagine what could have been, as the crew regroups and prepares for next weekend’s race at Sonoma, California, with renewed enthusiasm.
