    Taylor’s Momentum Postponed

ANAHEIM, CA — Coming off a strong runner-up finish in his last outing, Dennis Taylor’s trip to Pacific Raceways in Kent, Washington, served as a break-out performance, while testing a new set of “Muscle Heads” from Alan Johnson Performance Engines. Qualifying got off to a tough start, as Taylor suffered severe tire shake in the first session on Friday. In session two, the car settled down to a decent 5.76 at 251.11, which was good enough for the sixth spot. While the numbers were not spectacular, that run gave co-crew chiefs Ora Vasquez and Terry Morrow enough data to tune with.

Despite Saturday’s rain showers, racers did get their final qualifying shot. Dennis launched the Plumbing Concepts Camaro off the starting line while recording the quickest incremental numbers of his career – even better than those run by eventual number-one qualifier, Brian Hough. That is, until some studs sheared, slowing the car to a 5.95. Fortunately, it caused no internal carnage, just head scratching. Taylor theorized, “We really don’t know if Friday’s brutal tire shake contributed to this or not, but it very well could have.”

Sunday’s first round opened to cloudy skies and low 60s. Dennis drove through some early tire shake in round one, but got the win light, cranking out a nice 5.81. In round two, both drivers were late, but Taylor’s consistent 5.80/254 outdistanced Randy Parker and the team was headed to the final round. The only obstacle left was fourth qualifier, John Evanchuk, along with the 5:30pm Sunday curfew at Pacific Raceways. Unfortunately, time ran out and this event’s champion will be decided during qualifying at Pacific Raceways’ national event. Call it momentum postponed, as conditions will be very different, though possibly better. Taylor and his crew looks to improve on this success.
