    Taylor Knocks the Rust Off

ANAHEIM, CA — The NHRA season-opening Winternationals played out like Bill Murray’s movie, “Groundhog Day.” Mother Nature prevailed with five consecutive days of race-interrupting rain, allowing only one qualifying session for Sportsmen and Pro competitors, in between the pesky periods of precipitation. The NHRA Safety Safari deserves sincere thanks for its countless hours of track drying.

Thursday’s lone qualifying attempt saw 21 Top Alcohol Funny Cars filling the staging lanes and each one of them knew the track conditions were an unknown quantity. Taylor powered off the staring line and found the track to be unforgiving. His BTOSports.com Camaro made a hard move towards the wall and Dennis was forced to lift. The timeslip read 6.70-seconds at 147.62 mph, and though the team was upset over the aborted run, seven other drivers were not as fortunate and Taylor landed in the 14th spot.

When Tuesday came, racers finally saw the sun again, and cool temps promised big horsepower once the track warmed up. Dennis used experience to drive around Sean O’Bannon in round one, but a sluggish reaction time showed he hadn’t been in the car from a while. The scoreboards read 5.64-seconds at 242.71 mph, which set up a second-round encounter with Bret Williamson. Dennis reacted quicker, but his numbers were still not on par with mid-season times. The race was on, and Williamson’s 5.66 beat Taylor’s 5.67, in spite of his big top-end charge of 252.71 mph. Dennis had mixed reactions over his quarter-finals exit, as the new power combination showed an increase in horsepower. In closing, Dennis noted, “The data from those two runs will at least give us some direction as we prep the car for Las Vegas” (April 2 – 5).
