Taylor Pleased With 30th Season Start

ANAHEIM, CA — Dennis Taylor’s “We Gotta Have Fun 30th Anniversary Tour” got off to a good start this past weekend as the Plumbing Concepts team figured out Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. Thursday’s first qualifying session opened to great weather conditions, but tire spin kept them from running a successful lap. Team Taylor re-grouped, learned from their opening volley and applied that knowledge towards a fine 5.69 at 252.57 mph in the second attempt during the early afternoon on Friday. The temperature rose to 75 for the final qualifying session later that afternoon and Dennis recorded a 5.80-second time. With the 16-car field set, the team’s earlier 5.69 was good for the number eight spot.

Saturday brought Final Eliminations for the Top Alcohol Funny Cars and conditions for the Round 1 contest saw the thermometer rise to 77 degrees with a track temperature of 102. Taylor’s opponent had mechanical problems, but still attempted to stage his car on the starting line. As a result, Dennis held the throttle above 6,300 rpm for over 14 seconds before the starting lights activated. Taylor commented, “I don’t know what was going on in the other lane, but obviously, they were hoping I’d red light. It was tough to stay focused but I managed to hold my concentration and get the win light.” Dennis ran 5.76 at 251.

The air was even warmer on Sunday, with temps dipping into the low 80s, but Taylor was in tough against 11-time class champion, Frank Manzo, from Morganville, New Jersey. Crew chief, Terry Morrow, wanted to tweak the set-up. As Dennis explained it, “We decided to throw the kitchen sink at it to run Frank. On paper, it figured to run career-best numbers for us, but we went a little too far.” As such, Manzo ran Low E.T. of the event, while Taylor shook the tires. All in all, it was a decent start to Team Taylor’s 30th Anniversary Tour.
