    Taylor Gets Behind the Eight-Ball

ANAHEIM, CA — Dennis Taylor rolled into Auto Club Raceway at Pomona with the Plumbing Concepts Top Alcohol Funny Car ready to thunder. Also on hand were 25 other cars that were equally prepared to slug it out for the coveted 16-car Auto Club Finals field. Thursday’s first qualifying session saw cool conditions as Taylor rolled into the waterbox. When he let the clutch out, the car left hard and started to shake the tires. With the tires chattering, Dennis drifted out of the groove and took out the timing reflectors at half-track, disqualifying the run. Taylor did record the quickest 60-foot time of the session, so they were on the right track. Dennis noted, “This thing was a hand full. We’ll get it settled down.”

Their second qualifying attempt came on Friday, with differing atmospheric conditions. Another hard launch was followed by a 5.852-second, 252.38 mph timeslip. It was important to get that clean run under their belts, but the numbers were only good enough for the 18th spot on the ladder.

Friday’s final qualifying session brought the warmest temperatures and the worst corrected altitude, which affects the tune-up greatly. Dennis was out of the groove again, and the scoreboards read 5.91 at 249 mph. Despite the crew’s hard work, they found themselves on the outside looking in. Co-crew chiefs Ora Vasquez and Terry Morrow noted, “You have to earn the right to compete out here and we missed it.” Taylor added, “We got behind and never recovered. You can’t afford to lose a run when there are 26 cars capable of winning. This is a team that shouldn’t have to worry about qualifying. We should only have to worry about going rounds.” Dennis Taylor sends his sincere thanks to all his sponsors fans, and supporters and looks forward to the 2008 season.
