    Taylor Turns Performance Corner
ANAHEIM, CA — This weekend’s 2007 NHRA season opener in Pomona, California, proved to be a great outing for Dennis Taylor and his Plumbing Concepts crew. While there was no trophy celebration, there was a great deal of back slapping among the crew members throughout the event. Dennis began his march through qualifying with a stout 5.68-second run at over 255 mph on Thursday afternoon. Friday found the car quicker still, when the scoreboards lit up with a 5.62 at over 256. With 26 cars trying to be quick enough for the 16-car field, Taylor landed in the number five spot, while 10 other teams packed up.

Dennis noted, “We were happy with the way qualifying shaped up. I’m fortunate to have a great crew that does what it takes to make me look good.” With forecasters delivering threats of rain from the outset of the event, racers knew there was no room for wasted runs in qualifying – each one was important.

Fortunately, the precipitation held off and the first round of Eliminations was run under clear blue skies with nothing but sunshine. Taylor drew 12th qualifier, Sean Bellemeur, who was making his first appearance in Ron Meer’s car. Going in, Dennis figured the Plumbing Concepts Camaro was up to the task, as it had performed well both days. At the green light, Bellemeur used a four-hundredths of a second starting line advantage to outdistance Taylor’s quicker 5.66. The margin of victory was a mere .0035-seconds and Dennis added, “I wasn’t late, he was just better. We made three runs in the 5.60s and every one was faster than 255 mph, so we feel as though we’ve turned the corner, performance-wise.” He added, “I drove past him at 1,321 feet, but it wasn’t quite enough.” Co-Crew Chiefs, Ora Vasquez and Terry Morrow were responsible for calling the shots, and Taylor feels confident after this season opening charge.
