Taylor Tries to Harness the Power

ANAHEIM, CA — Most drag racers would welcome the opportunity to have an abundance of power. That’s what seems to be plaguing Dennis Taylor, his crew chief, Terry Morrow, and rest of the Plumbing Concepts crew these days. Several changes were made to Taylor’s engine combination over the winter without enough opportunities to test. And though track time has been limited to two aborted pre-season runs and two events in 2008, records show impressive 60-foot times with difficulty harnessing the power through the gear changes.

This weekend’s trip to Arizona yielded a quick 5.79 test run on Thursday, followed by tire shake, with yet more shake during Friday’s opening qualifier. Terry noted, “The first qualifying shot is always the most important run. Even the slightest miscalculation can put you behind the eight ball and that’s where we ended up.” Dennis added, “This thing’s a monster down low. Our 60-foot times are becoming standard-bearing numbers for the class, but we can’t seem to calm it down enough to keep the tires from going up in smoke by the 330-foot mark.”

Several changes were made for Saturday’s mid-day session and Taylor said, “We came really close to making a decent run, but a suspected tire issue seems to have pushed the car out of the groove and into the top-end timing blocks. That disqualified the run, but our computer shows we actually ran 5.82.”

For the final chance to secure a spot in the eight-car qualified field, more adjustments were made and the car responded with tire smoke. Morrow summed things up saying, “It’s always a challenge when you have to test and qualify at the same time, but we’re working with some equipment that nobody else has yet. The reward will be even sweeter when we can get the engine and clutch to communicate with the tires on a regular basis.”
