    Taylor Trips at the Tree

ANAHEIM, CA — After testing on Monday and Thursday of last week, Dennis Taylor and the Plumbing Concepts crew figured they were in good shape going into the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Pacific Division 7 Finals. The stage for this Wild West Shootout was set for The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Things went well during both days of testing and Crew Chief, Ora Vasquez, found some new clutch timing changes that were favorable, as far as the car was concerned. Dennis commented, “In spite of the altitude and temperature challenges, the car ran well.” The pressure was on, however, as Taylor looked to improve upon his second-place finish (by less than 10 points) in the 2004 Division 7 chase.

With 21 Top Alcohol Funny Cars battling for a spot in the eight-car qualified field, Wild West Shootout was certainly the best way to describe this event. Conditions for Friday’s late-afternoon opening session showed 73 degrees, 30-percent humidity, a corrected altitude at 3,683 feet above sea level, and a track temperature of 84 degrees. Taylor rolled out just before the last pair of cars and cranked out a safe 5.783-second pass at 247mph, which was good for the number seven position.

Saturday’s early round saw much more favorable altitude conditions with the corrected numbers reading 2,870 feet with the air temp and humidity virtually the same as Friday. However, the track temperature was up to 106 degrees. Dennis unloaded a nice 5.723-second blast at 248mph, landing him in the number four slot. In the later session, air conditions worsened, which obviously had adverse reactions on the tune-up in the Plumbing Concepts Camaro. Taylor launched hard and got loose early in the run, which caused the car to hunt for the center line. Dennis reeled it in and tripped the timers at 5.76 seconds at 244mph, losing speed and elapsed time in the process. His earlier run was still good enough to secure the number four spot in the field on Sunday, setting up a first-round match-up with Tennessee’s Von Smith.

Sunday’s conditions were about on par for this high desert location, showing 78 degrees, 22-percent humidity, a track temperature of 107 and corrected altitude of just over 4,900 feet above sea level. At the hint of green, Taylor was long gone, leaving the dreaded red light in his wake. What’s worse, Dennis wasted a fine 5.73, which was a tick quicker than Smith’s 5.74. Team Taylor heads for Pomona Raceway next weekend for the NHRA Auto Club Finals.
