Taylor Just Misses Las Vegas Cut

ANAHEIM, CA — Dennis Taylor and his Plumbing Concepts Camaro Funny Car has a unique challenge this year. They’re certainly not down on power, but the team’s difficulties stem from managing the power that’s at their disposal. During Friday’s first qualifying session in Las Vegas, Dennis reacted to tire spin off the starting line by short-shifting the car in hopes of saving the 6.01-second run. He noted, “We’re still building too much wheel speed at the hit of the throttle and it makes the car un-driveable. There’s a fine line between taking power out and taking too much power out.” That proved true on Friday’s later attempt; though the numbers improved to 5.88 at just 218 mph. Crew chief, Terry Morrow, added, “We made progress there, but the car was too weak off the starting line, and as a result, the half-track speed was off. We’re searching for the balance.”

The final try to join the Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s qualified field came at mid-afternoon on Saturday when the track surface reached its highest point. Needing to be somewhat conservative when others had overpowered the track, Taylor recorded a 5.80-second lap at 251.53 mph. He commented, “It sure felt stronger than what the timeslip said. I thought we ran a low 5.70 there. We’ll be okay, we’re just one or two runs behind the eight-ball and the competition is always strong here in Division 7.”

Though considered Sportsman racers, the Plumbing Concepts Funny Car crew is professional in every respect. They always find positives in with the negatives. Last year, their Las Vegas outing was the fifth race on their calendar, and this year, it’s only the third. Less testing, and less competitive runs always results in lost tuning data. But with a recent re-scheduling of Division 7 races, there’s almost eight weeks before his next outing, so Taylor will be testing.
