    Texas Tough on Taylor

ANAHEIM, CA — Dennis Taylor’s Plumbing Concepts Top Alcohol Funny Car was responding to treatment during qualifying at the Texas Motorplex. A total of 25 cars attempted to gain a spot in the 16-car field at the O’Reilly Fall Nationals and Taylor’s first two runs were progressively quicker. Dennis came out of the box with a decent 5.87 at only 208 mph, and improved to a 5.69 at 254. The final session looked to be even better, but a loud bang from the supercharger turned things sour and Dennis slowed to a 5.88 at 201 mph. Taylor mentioned, “We haven’t had a great deal of parts attrition this season, but for some reason we’re making up for in Dallas. However, we did qualify in the top half of the field (7), while nine other drivers failed to make the cut. We worked hard here.”

As a veteran of the Top Alcohol wars, Dennis is fortunate to have a long list of friends. The first to come to his assistance after the engine damaging 5.88 was Bob Newberry, who elected not to run in the final qualifying session. Taylor noted, “When Bob learned that we hurt it, he came over and said, ‘whatever you need.’ He and his guys helped us change engines before the first round, and I doubt we would have made it without their help. We found some non-mechanical damage that added to our workload. I can’t thank those guys enough.”

Co-crew chiefs Ora Vasquez and Terry Morrow looked at their computer data during the mad thrash and made some adjustments for the first round. At the green light, the car was on another good run, but the telltale bang signaled another malfunction and their day was done. Dennis closed by saying, “We’re better than the numbers showed this weekend. But, Terry and his guys at Alan Johnson Performance will take a look at our valvetrain issues and we’ll have it all sorted out for the Auto Club Finals at Pomona.”
