    Taylor Seals the Deal

ANAHEIM, CA — Dennis Taylor has been waiting two months to contest the final round that was postponed during his first of two trips to Pacific Raceways in Kent, Washington. The only potential make-up date was this weekend’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Yellowstone Dragstrip in Acton, Montana. Dennis noted, “When you get on a roll and win a couple of rounds, it’s always better to keep on racing. My guys wanted to get this one over with.”

The Plumbing Concepts Top Alcohol Funny Car was racing at Yellowstone for the first time, so the track and air conditions were an unknown. Co-crew chiefs Ora Vasquez and Terry Morrow set the car up conservatively for the first qualifying session on Friday and came away with a 6.01-second run, good for the number five spot. Saturday would offer one more pass to figure things out before the final session would decide the Seattle winner. On that shot, Dennis managed a 5.99 at 239.48 mph, citing that a lack of grip caused the car to move around and lowered the speed as a result.

With points at stake, it was time for Taylor and John Evanchuk to settle the Seattle score. Unfortunately, his opponent was shut off on the starting line due to an oil leak and Dennis singled, running 5.95 at 242.41. Ora Vasquez added, “We would have preferred to race for the win, but that’s drag racing. My hat’s off to this crew. The car ran better on every run and we saw everything from high winds to thunderstorms to brutal heat here.” Dennis was hoping to double up on Sunday and had the car to do it. But while staging, a brake malfunction affected his concentration and he was distracted at the start, losing a close race. All Taylor said was, “Mission accomplished. We came to win the Seattle deal and got it done, so now we have five weeks to regroup and get ready for Texas.”
