Dyno Dave wins rained out Houston event

ENNIS, Texas - Despite looking to win two events going into this weekend's O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec at the Texas Motorplex just south of Dallas, NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster rookie "Dyno" Dave Heitzman was able to win one of his chances in the Skull Shine/Torco Race Fuels A/Fuel Dragster. Heitzman took his first career divisional win by defeating Spencer Massey in qualifying, which served as the final round from last weekend's rained-out Houston divisional event, but smoked the tires in the first round of this weekend's main event.

Heitzman, from Decatur, Mich., qualified his Tom Conway tuned injected-nitro dragster fourth in the field with a 5.422 second elapsed time at 255.19 mph. In his final round match up with Massey, Heitzman took the win in a close drag race with a 5.552 at 247.88 mph to Massey's right-there 5.603 at 261.22 mph.

Heitzman's fortunes changed on Saturday as he smoked the tires against Troy Kaiser, who took the win with a 5.850 at 246.03 mph.

"It's a real humbling sport," said Heitzman. "One day we're on top of the world with a win, the next we have our head in the dirt after smoking the tires in the first round. The team did a great job this weekend, we win as a team, we lose as a team, and we'll just move on to the next race as a team. A cold front moved through after qualifying and gave us conditions we didn't see all weekend. This Torco car is making some big horsepower, and the ground just wouldn't allow it."

"All and all we're still happy about putting this Skull Shine - Torco Race Fuels car in it's first winner's circle," Heitzman continued. "We'll go back to Earlville and see if we can't get another Wally."

The next stop on the tour for the Skull Gear/Torco Race Fuels team will be the resumption of the rain-delayed Earlville, Ia., Division 5 event where Heitzman will take on Randy Meyer in round one. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
