Main & Martinets hoping for strong showing at home track

BAYTOWN, Texas - Just a few weeks removed from a No. 2 qualifying effort at No Problem Raceway Park just outside of New Orleans, NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Darvin Martinets and Team Owner Howie Main hope to have a strong showing at their home track of Houston Raceway Park for this weekend's O'Reilly Spring Nationals in Baytown, Texas. The team reached the final round of the last national event they competed in, the O'Reilly Fall Nationals last September in Dallas, and hope to duplicate that success in front of the hometown fans, family and friends this weekend.

Martinets, from nearby Lake Jackson, Texas, is excited about the team's chances based on solid performances at their past few events. At their most recent event, the team qualified No. 2 with a 5.37 second elapsed time at 264 mph, but were upset by rookie driver Travis Nicholson's career-best 5.35 in round one. Undeterred, Martinets and the team lead by Main and Tuning Consultant Will Hanna, another Houston area racer, look forward to defending the home turf this weekend.

"The car has been running really well lately," said Martinets. "I think that's a testament to Howie keeping the team in tact from last year. Most of the team is from around here, so doing well here would be pretty big for us. We'll have the full crew in town this weekend with Howie's brothers Kevin and Danny will be coming in from Connecticut. They're great help and will definitely give our crew of Will and Rick Hanna, Scott Vaudrin and David Crabb a big boost. Of course, if we didn't have my wife Natalie and Howie's wife Carolyn keeping us in line and fed, we'd all be in trouble."

Competitors in the Top Alcohol Dragster category can utilize one of two engine and fuel combinations. They can either utilize methanol alcohol and use a supercharger (Blown Alcohol Dragster), which Martinets uses, or nitromethane with no supercharger (A/Fuel Dragster). With steady refinements to the A/Fuel combination over the past fifteen years, A/Fuel teams have swept the National Championships since 2002. The Main & Martinets team will be the only Blown Alcohol Dragster in competition this weekend's field.

"There will be some heavy hitters no doubt about it," stated Martinets. "Those A/Fuel cars are subject to lay down a big number at any time; we learned that the hard way down in Belle Rose. We're hoping for some good old Houston heat to help level the field a little bit. We've been working on our combination and we're just going to do the best we can. We have the best parts money can buy and a decent amount of equipment, but we could really use some additional sponsorship help. We're trying to do the best we can with the budget we have to work with. Right now we're getting some help from DragRaceHose.com, Pipe Tools, Inc., and Cliff's Bits, Inc., and we've just picked up Rislone Engine Oil Stabilizer as an associate sponsor. We want to do a good job for them and show what we can do for other potential sponsors."

Qualifying begins on Friday with two sessions and will conclude with one final session Saturday morning. Eliminations begin on Saturday afternoon with first round, and final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
