Danny Townsend and VIPsports.com Almost Trip the Tipster

Milford, Michigan. National Dragster’s Tricky Tipster, an informal forecast of race winners, overlooked Danny Townsend and the VIPsports.com Dodge Stratus as a threat at the 7th Annual NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Townsend not only threatened the field, he served notice that the odds of winning are on the side of VIPsports.com.

The ParkerTech Racing Services crew chiefs, Frank Parker and his father, Dan Parker, were tuning in the high altitude of Las Vegas for the first time. “Compensating for altitude and atmospheric conditions is always a fascinating challenge,” said the elder Parker. “Last week, in Houston, we were at an adjusted altitude of 1,100 feet and in 85% humidity. This week we’re at 3,600 feet with 29% humidity. That’s the greatest change with which we’ve ever dealt.” But they dealt with it well. Townsend’s qualifying efforts were consistent and a 5.713 and 252.00 best pass placed the Mopar Hemi-powered Dodge Stratus sixth in the starting lineup.

The first elimination round paired the VIPsports.com car with Dennis Taylor’s Camaro. Taylor shut down early and handed the win to Townsend’s 5.769, 248.48 mph pass. In the second round, the team faced Bucky Austin’s Monte Carlo. ParkerTech’s setup gave Townsend an arrow-straight run, while Austin shook the tires and dropped just enough speed to lose by a three-foot margin. The odds for VIPsports.com were starting to look good.

Cy Chesterman’s Monte Carlo opposed the team in the semi-final round. Chesterman took an early lead, but Townsend had a great catch-up game going until the blower’s burst panel popped and bled off a ton of power. Even with that turn of luck, the VIPsports.com Dodge Stratus clicked off a 5.801 elapsed time to Chesterman’s 5.811, sending the Tricky Tipster a message to pay closer attention.

With their four race “spring tour” at an end, ParkerTech Racing Services is heading home with some impressive results. They qualified for all four events, made it to the semi-finals in one, the second round in two and won the TAFC title in Bradenton. Danny Townsend and the VIPsports.com car are now third in NHRA National TAFC points, tied for first in Division 3 and second in Division 3 Jeg’s All Stars.

ESPN2 will broadcast the 7th Annual NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals Sportsman action on April 16, from 12 – 1 pm and again on April 27, from 2 – 3 pm. The next race for VIPsports.com is the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Indianapolis Raceway Park, April 21-23.
