Milford, Michigan. The CarQuest Auto Parts NHRA Nationals turned out to be another tough race for the VIPsports.com Dodge Stratus Top Alcohol Funny Car. But, there was a bright moment for the crew when they were recognized by the National Hot Rod Association as the “Best Appearing Team” at the event. This is the second time they have been so honored.

The bright blue and white VIPsports.com car graphics, selected by team owner Frank Parker, have been complimented since first rolling out of the trailer in 2005. The matching blue and white crew uniforms complete the attractive, business-like appearance of the ParkerTech Racing Services operation.

In spite of intense efforts, the car’s on-track appearance wasn’t quite as bright. Changing weather and scattered showers complicated the tuning process and held the car to the eleventh qualifying spot. Danny Townsend, team driver, was again in the Jeg’s All Stars event, due to his runner-up finish last year. With Townsend’s multiple appearances as a Jeg’s All Stars competitor, the crew had high hopes of doing just a wee bit better than runner-up. Townsend got everything out of the car that he could, but fell just short of advancing to the second round. Though the pass in the Jeg’s round provided extra data, and the car was still strong, the first round of regular race eliminations marked the team’s exit from the event.

Parker acknowledged that the weekend was a disappointment. “But,” he said, “we aren’t discouraged. Danny and the crew are the best and the best just shrug off disappointment and look for ways to improve.” The team still holds the sixth spot in national TAFC points and second in Division 3.

The next race for the VIPsports.com group is the July 14-16 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, back at the Rt. 66 Speedway, in Joliet.
