Cody “The Flash” Perkins Takes TAD Win in Division 7 Closer

The final race of the Western Division, held in Bakersfield California September 7-8, resulted in a hard fought victory for the Blown Chances Top Alcohol Dragster team. After losing a motor in the final qualifying session the team worked late into the night and throughout the following day to prepare for a difficult first round match-up with Jim Whitely. “I hated having to run Jim in the first round,” said Perkins, “That’s a great bunch of guys over there; they even helped lift in the spare motor that we ran against them with.”

Luck was certainly on Perkins’ side when in a major surprise, the Blown Chances Dragster spun the tires at the hit. “I heard a pop and thought it was my car after over reving the motor. Then I saw Whitely coasting and felt my car still running so I eased back on it, stabbed the gears, and got the win.” Unfortunately Perkins motor was hurt after the tire smoking pass. So the team had to remove the heads and rebuild them to make the second round.

After an exciting turnaround, Perkins faced the nitro burning machine of the Edgecombe family, driven by Randy Eakins. The air temperature had cooled which evened out the playing field between the two combinations. With a slight performance advantage, Perkins beat Eakins with a 5.492 to 5.535 respectively.

That set up the final between Perkins and three time defending Division 7 champion Chris Demke. Perkins had beaten Demke in all three prior match-ups this season and was able to do it again to make it four in a row against the Peen Rite team. This time it was a hole-shot victory, resulting in only 10 feet separating the 260 MPH dragsters at the finish-line.

Cody would like to thank Gary Mink for all his hard work throughout the weekend. “I’d also like to thank Tim Nunes and Jim Whitely. Tim normally does the clutch on Jim’s car but Jim allowed him to come over and help us make the last turnaround which really shows that that team is a class act,” said Cody. “And most of all I would like to thank my mom (Trudy), dad (Bob), and cousin (Troy) for working so hard, so that we can go compete, and win, against some of the best racers in the country.”
